How a thermal drone pet search works

Skyecam uses professional thermal-imaging (infrared) drones to find lost pets by their body heat — day or night, across terrain that’s impossible to search on foot.

When thermal searches work best

Thermal imaging is sharpest when the ground is cool, so a warm animal stands out most clearly. In practice that means night, pre-dawn, or the early morning hours — roughly 4 to 7 AM. Midday sun and heat-soaked pavement wash that contrast out, which is why many of our searches are scheduled for overnight or first light. Calling sooner helps us plan the most effective window.

An honest word on what thermal can and can’t do

We’d rather be straight with you than over-promise. Thermal drones are powerful, but they aren’t magic. The camera needs a line of sight to your pet, so it can’t see through walls, buildings, dense evergreen canopy, or heavy solid cover. In dense neighborhoods, warm rooftops, cars, and AC units add “noise” to the image, and a scared cat tucked under a porch or inside a garage may be out of reach from the air. Thermal is at its best for pets lost in large, open, or rugged areas, or after an event like a car accident, fire, or fireworks — and less suited to an indoor-only cat hiding a few feet from home. When you call, we’ll tell you honestly whether a drone search makes sense for your situation. If it doesn’t, we’ll point you toward what will.

A real Skyecam recovery

How to avoid lost-pet recovery scams

In a crisis, it’s easy to be taken advantage of — and sadly, pet-recovery scams are common. A few things to watch for, whether you hire us or someone else: be wary of anyone who demands a large payment up front to “release” your pet, claims they’ve already found it without showing you clear proof, or pressures you to pay before doing any real work. A legitimate service explains exactly what it will do, stays in honest communication, and never holds your pet for ransom. Ask questions, trust your gut, and don’t send money to anyone who can’t show you they’re real.
